David Conrad, VP for Almo/Irinv Music in Nashville told Billboard "As soon as she began to play there was not a doubt in my mind that [she] was one of the freshest, most unusual, most special songwriters I had ever heard. She'd got what Randy Newman or James Taylor have got. To me, Gillain sounds like a Woody Guthrie for the'90sand thereafter."
David Conrad signed her immediately to Almo/Irving Music publishing. Jerry Moss signed Gillian Welch to Almo Sounds.
