Joyce Kennedy's friendship with A&M Records artist Jeffrey Osborne led to her signing with the label and their duet "The Last Time We Made Love." The song was a top 10 hit on the U.S. R&B chart.

Nelson George reported that Kennedy's next single, "Stronger Than Before" by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager was promoted to build Kennedy's image with black record buyers.
